Zihuatanejo International Airport Donates and Reforests Buttonwood Mangroves
OMA and the Municipality of Zihuatanejo donated 947 buttonwood mangroves at the Refugio de Potosí.
The initiative is part of VINCI Airports’ Environment Week and reinforces OMA’s commitment to sustainability in the region.
Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, October 3, 2025 – As part of VINCI Airports’ 2025 Environment Week, Zihuatanejo International Airport, in coordination with the Municipal Institute of Ecology and Sustainable Development, held a donation and reforestation event for buttonwood mangroves (Conocarpus erectus) at the Refugio de Potosí.
The event was attended by local authorities, environmental organizations, and tourism representatives, including Mayor Lizette Tapia Castro; Juan Pedro Belmonte Pérez, Zihuatanejo Airport Administrator; representatives from PROFEPA; and the Ixtapa Zihuatanejo Hotel Association, along with members of the local community.
During the event, 947 buttonwood mangroves—a native species protected under Mexico’s NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010—were donated. These plants help protect the coastline, preserve wetlands, and support local wildlife.
The mangroves will be managed by the Municipality of Zihuatanejo de Azueta, which will distribute them to private companies and civil associations as part of a regional ecological restoration plan.
Buttonwood mangroves play a key role in Guerrero’s coastal ecosystem. They:
Contribute to erosion prevention.
Provide habitats for aquatic species and migratory birds.
Improve water quality through natural filtration.
Aid in climate change mitigation by capturing carbon.
This initiative highlights OMA’s commitment to sustainability and aligns with Commitment No. 3 of VINCI Airports’ Manifesto: “Together, let’s promote green growth,” which promotes climate protection, efficient use of resources through a circular economy, and the preservation of natural environments.
Through these efforts, OMA continues to foster environmental awareness and responsibility in Zihuatanejo and across the state of Guerrero.
