OMA builds the Monterrey Airport of the Future: Expansion advances with new baggage claim system and modern walkways
- Grupo Aeroportuario del Centro Norte (OMA) presents progress on its multi-year investment plan (2026-2030) totaling 8 billion pesos for the expansion and modernization of Monterrey International Airport.
- Preparation underway for the opening of a new domestic baggage claim area featuring five carousels capable of handling between 2,500 and 3,000 pieces per hour and up to 10 simultaneous flights.
- Terminal A surface area will grow from 40,000 to over 100,000 square meters by the end of 2030.
Monterrey, N.L., October 26, 2026 – As part of the modernization and expansion of Monterrey International Airport, Grupo Aeroportuario del Centro Norte (OMA) and its strategic partner, VINCI Airports, are preparing for the upcoming opening of a new Baggage Claim Hall, passenger walkways, and a connection to the existing Finger 1 in Terminal A.
With a total area of 4,150 square meters, the new baggage claim area will be dedicated to domestic flights. It will feature five high-speed carousels with the capacity to process between 2,500 and 3,000 pieces of luggage and up to 10 simultaneous flights per hour.
The facility will be equipped with "First Last Baggage" technology (a pioneer in Mexico), which precisely identifies, tracks, and measures every piece of luggage from the first to the last for each flight. This will help detect delays and reduce passenger waiting times, while also streamlining the claim process in the event of lost luggage.
"Monterrey International Airport is solidifying its position as a logistics hub in Northern Mexico, driven by new nearshoring opportunities and continuous economic growth. With the support of passengers, airlines, and the great team of professionals at OMA, we are building the airport of the future for the region. By utilizing the most advanced technology and focusing on the user experience, we are becoming a bridge for global connectivity, competitiveness, and development for the country," stated Ricardo Dueñas Espriú, CEO of OMA.
This new space was built with the goal of being sustainable and energy-efficient. The Baggage Claim Hall is designed under LEED criteria, features 100% automated LED lighting, and includes high-energy-efficiency equipment that automatically stops when no passenger traffic is detected, thereby reducing electricity consumption.
Additionally, as recently announced, a 7.8 MW solar power plant is being constructed, which will contribute to covering approximately 40% of the terminal's total energy demand.
The upcoming opening of a walkway between the new Baggage Claim Hall and the current Terminal A was also announced, along with a connection and corridor leading to Finger 1, which will reduce on-tarmac boarding and deplaning.
This connecting corridor also features two 35-meter-long moving walkways to expedite passenger flow, in addition to escalators, elevators, and restroom facilities.
These advancements are part of the multi-year investment plan (2026-2030) of 8 billion pesos authorized by the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation, which aims to increase passenger handling capacity from 15 million to 18 million annually.
Grupo Aeroportuario del Centro Norte reaffirms its commitment and determination to continue contributing to Mexico’s economic development and sustainable growth through investments in technology, connectivity, and improved services for passengers and airlines.
