OMA Advances Modernization of Monterrey International Airport with Preventive Renovation of Its Main Runway

  • The project is part of an 8-billion-peso investment program aimed at the expansion and modernization of the airport.
  • The works were planned over 18 months in advance and coordinated with authorities, airlines, and the airport community.
  • The renovation will primarily take place during nighttime hours and will extend the useful life of the runway by seven to ten years.

Monterrey, Nuevo León, June 24 – As part of its investment program to expand, modernize, and strengthen the infrastructure of Monterrey International Airport, OMA will undertake a preventive renovation of its main runway between September and December of this year.

The project is part of the 8-billion-pesos investment program currently underway, which includes initiatives for operational infrastructure, expansion projects, and new technologies designed to enhance the capacity, safety, and efficiency of airport services.

Renovation works on the main runway, which measures 3,000 meters in length and 45 meters in width, will include the removal of the existing asphalt surface and the installation of a new layer. This intervention aims to maintain the structural and operational integrity of the pavement, meet current and future demand at the airport, uphold operational safety standards, and comply with applicable aviation regulations.

The renovation was determined based on technical studies and periodic evaluations of airport infrastructure. Planning began over 18 months ago, following a preventive conservation model that enables scheduling interventions before the infrastructure reaches critical conditions.

With this intervention, the runway’s lifespan is expected to extend by an additional seven to ten years, depending on operational conditions and ongoing maintenance programs.

Coordinated Planning to Ensure Operational Continuity

The execution of the project has been coordinated with aviation authorities, the 12 airlines operating at Monterrey International Airport, and the various members of the airport community. This coordination was communicated and agreed upon in the Local Operations and Scheduling Committees, which meet monthly.

Nighttime maintenance windows have been established, generally scheduled between 12:00 or 12:15 a.m. to 6:00 a.m., a period of lower flight activity.

Airlines were informed in advance and have made necessary adjustments to their itineraries. Any specific modifications to flights will be determined and directly communicated by individual airlines to their passengers.

The program will run for approximately four months, with progress subject to weather and operational conditions, as paving works require specific parameters to ensure the quality and durability of the new surface.

During this period, the auxiliary runway will be able to support operations for aircraft compatible with its technical and operational characteristics. Upgrades to lighting and visual aids have strengthened its operational conditions.

Investment to Support Airport Growth

The runway renovation complements the ongoing expansion and modernization projects at Monterrey International Airport.

These initiatives include the expansion of airport facilities and the implementation of technologies to streamline and strengthen airport processes, such as iBoarding automated boarding systems, e-gates for electronic access, new migration screening filters, and next-generation X-ray equipment installed at passenger inspection points.

These investments are part of a comprehensive strategy to accommodate the airport’s growth, increase its operational capacity, and maintain appropriate standards of safety, efficiency, and passenger experience.

"The preventive renovation of the main runway is a long-term investment and an integral part of the transformation of Monterrey International Airport. It’s a project planned in advance and coordinated with authorities, airlines, and the airport community to strengthen our infrastructure and minimize any potential impacts during its execution," stated Ricardo Dueñas, CEO of OMA.

OMA will maintain ongoing coordination with authorities, airlines, and the airport community throughout the development of the works. Passengers are advised to consult directly with their airline for updates regarding their flights.
