OMA’s 13 Airports Attain Level 3 “Optimisation” Certification in the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) Program
Mexico City, Mexico, February 13, 2025.- Grupo Aeroportuario del Centro Norte (OMA) is proud to announce that all 13 of its airports have attained Level 3 – "Optimisation" certification under the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program, strengthening its leadership in sustainable management and reaffirming its commitment to reducing carbon emissions in the airport industry, in line with VINCI Airports’ environmental strategy.
Two years after obtaining Level 1 accreditation, OMA has continuously implemented environmental mitigation strategies, progressing from mapping and reducing its carbon footprint to optimizing emissions management. This applies not only to its own operations but also to those of its commercial partners, airlines, and key stakeholders. This milestone underscores the group’s commitment to sustainability and the adoption of innovative practices to minimize the environmental impact of its operations.
"This recognition reflects OMA’s dedication and vision to transform airport management with a sustainable approach. Not only have we optimized our own operations, but we have also collaborated with our commercial partners and airlines to implement strategies that generate a meaningful environmental impact,” said Ricardo Dueñas, CEO of OMA.
A Step Forward in Sustainable Management
The Airport Carbon Accreditation program, developed by Airports Council International (ACI), is the only global standard for assessing carbon emissions management in airports. To achieve Level 3 – "Optimisation," OMA has not only achieved measurable reductions in its own emissions but has also collaborated with airlines, tenants, and other strategic partners to strengthen carbon management throughout the entire airport value chain.
Among the key actions and verified requirements, OMA’s airports have demonstrated:
- Maintaining a reduction in controlled emission sources (Scope 1 and 2), particularly in fuel consumption and electricity use, through the implementation of solar panels, battery banks, and electric airport buses, among others.
- Mapping Scope 3 emissions, which include third-party-controlled operations such as aircraft movements, transportation of passengers and airport staff, cargo movements, energy consumption, waste management, leisure and business travel;
- Developing stakeholder engagement programs across all airports to encourage the adoption responsible operational practices that contribute to carbon emission mitigation. This category includes sustainability initiatives with an impact beyond carbon emission reduction, such as:
-
- The use of both self-generated and purchased renewable energy for third-party consumption;
- Collaboration with airlines to launch pilot programs for in-flight waste segregation;
- Ongoing promotion of sustainability policies among commercial partners;
- Awareness campaigns focused on natural resource conservation;
- The formation of working groups and committees to support tenants and airlines in their decarbonization processes.
Commitment to the Future
OMA remains committed to enhancing its sustainability strategy by investing in efficient infrastructure, expanding the use of renewable energy, and promoting responsible practices among all airport stakeholders.
With the attainment of Level 3 accreditation in the Airport Carbon Accreditation program, OMA reaffirms its commitment to innovation in airport management and to building a more sustainable future for the aviation industry. The company will continue to advance with determination, reinforcing its leadership in sustainability as part of its goal to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
