OMA strengthens Nuevo Leon's logistics capacity; Lufthansa Cargo initiates air cargo service

  • German airline Lufthansa Cargo announces new cargo transport route Frankfurt – Mexico City – Monterrey – Frankfurt.
  • OMA Cargo consolidates Monterrey International Airport as an attractive logistics option to capitalize on nearshoring opportunities.

Monterrey, México, May 8, 2024.- The German company, Lufthansa Cargo, one of the world's leading airlines, will offer air cargo transport service between Mexico and Germany starting in June, with stops at Monterrey International Airport and Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA), boosting Nuevo León as a logistics hub in a key region to capitalize on investments derived from nearshoring.

This announcement was made today at an event organized by OMA in the presence of the CEO, Ricardo Dueñas, and Frank Nozinsky, General Manager of Lufthansa Cargo Logistics Services in Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, Central America, and the Caribbean.

With an initial frequency of one flight per week, a long-distance Boeing 777F freighter with a capacity of 85 tons, Lufthansa Cargo will strengthen the export and import sector in the northern region of the country and provide logistics solutions to and from Central Europe and various countries in Asia and the Middle East.

“As we celebrate two decades of operating with our cargo unit this year, we reaffirm OMA Cargo's objective to promote foreign trade by offering logistics solutions,” explained Ricardo Dueñas, CEO of OMA.

Currently, key investments are being made in OMA Cargo with the goal of expanding its warehouse capacity by 50%, as well as digitalizing cargo handling systems and investing in electric forklifts to reduce our fuel usage by 79%.

Frank Nozinsky shared: "After years of planning and overcoming challenges, we are pleased to announce the start of our air cargo operations to Monterrey. Despite the obstacles, including the pandemic, this is just the beginning of a strong relationship with our clients in a market we perceive as having immense potential. We are confident in our ability to soon expand our offerings and further strengthen our presence in the region."

As part of its commitment to logistical excellence, Lufthansa Cargo will be offering daily ground services to efficiently connect flights from Frankfurt International Airport to General Mariano Escobedo International Airport.

With this launch, the subsidiary Lufthansa Cargo Logistics Services Mexico (LCSLM), a 100% Mexican company subsidiary of Lufthansa Cargo AG, begins operations. This business unit will supervise cargo handling, represent the airline, and be the point of contact in Monterrey for customers. Services will commence operations at the end of this May.

As a consequence of the nearshoring phenomenon, specialists estimate a growth of between 10% and 15% in imports and exports, which is why OMA Cargo continues to seek alliances with other airlines to expand the network of routes for this service.

OMA added that in addition to Lufthansa Cargo, three other cargo airlines will begin operations from Monterrey soon: Mas Air, Aerounion, and Air Canada.

Grupo Aeroportuario del Centro Norte, S.A.B. de C.V., known as OMA, operates 13 international airports in nine states of central and northern Mexico. OMA’s airports serve Monterrey, Mexico’s third largest metropolitan area, the tourist destinations of Acapulco, Mazatlán, and Zihuatanejo, and nine other regional centers and border cities.
