Monterrey, Nuevo León, June 4, 2026 – OMA Airports welcomed Viva’s inaugural Monterrey–New York (JFK) flight at Terminal A of Monterrey International Airport, marking the launch of a new direct route that expands Nuevo León’s international air service offering and strengthens connectivity between two key cities for tourism, business, investment, and cultural exchange.

Nuevo León currently has 66 active domestic and international routes and handled more than 3.5 million passengers during the first quarter of 2026. This sustained growth highlights the importance of Monterrey International Airport within Mexico’s airport system and its ability to meet increasing demand for both business and leisure travel, as well as international connectivity.

The new route comes at a strategic time for the region, amid growing travel demand driven by holiday seasons, international events, and the upcoming World Cup 2026, for which Monterrey will serve as one of the host cities. In this context, strengthening connectivity with key markets such as the United States creates new opportunities to facilitate passenger mobility, attract visitors, and support productive sectors.

The inaugural event was attended by Samuel García Sepúlveda, Governor of Nuevo León; Jesús Horacio González, Vice President of Corporate Affairs at Viva; Abelardo Muñoz, Traffic Director at OMA Airports; Melissa A. Bishop, U.S. Consul General in Monterrey; as well as representatives from the tourism, business, and aviation sectors.

During the event, Governor Samuel García Sepúlveda highlighted the importance of continuing to strengthen Nuevo León’s international connectivity to foster tourism, investment, and economic development.

Maricarmen Martínez Villarreal, Secretary of Tourism of Nuevo León, emphasized that this new service reflects the coordinated efforts of airlines, the airport, the tourism industry, and the State Government to continue expanding the state’s international network.

“Nuevo León continues to strengthen its international connectivity through routes that expand opportunities for tourism, business, and exchange. This new connection to New York represents an important opportunity to further enhance our state’s international presence,” she said.

For OMA, the launch of this direct service underscores the importance of collaborating closely with airline partners to develop an attractive and efficient route network aligned with passengers’ needs. Air connectivity depends not only on opening new destinations, but also on having the infrastructure, operational capacity, and coordination among airports, airlines, authorities, and tourism stakeholders.

“This route is the result of coordinated work with Viva and a shared vision focused on responding to market demand, expanding travel options for passengers, and supporting Monterrey’s growth as one of the leading air connectivity hubs in northern Mexico,” said Ricardo Dueñas, CEO of OMA.

The Monterrey–New York route commenced operations on June 4 and will operate five weekly frequencies on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

Flights will depart Monterrey at 6:10 p.m. and arrive in New York at 12:20 a.m. The return service will depart New York at 1:30 a.m. and arrive in Monterrey at 4:15 a.m.

“At Viva, we are pleased to resume direct service between Monterrey and New York, a connection that strengthens tourism, commercial, and cultural ties between both cities. Monterrey is our main operational hub, and we remain committed to expanding its international connectivity by offering more accessible and convenient travel options for our passengers. This new route reflects our commitment to contributing to the economic and tourism development of Nuevo León by connecting it with one of the world’s most important destinations,” said Jesús Horacio González, Vice President of Corporate Affairs at Viva.

Viva currently operates more than 50 direct routes to and from Monterrey, strengthening Nuevo León’s connectivity with domestic and international destinations.

Additionally, Nuevo León maintains air connectivity with 11 of the 16 host cities of the World Cup 2026, further reinforcing Monterrey International Airport’s role as a key gateway for national and international mobility in the years ahead.
